Panoramic Maps
Many are familiar with this panoramic map of Cambridge, which is dated 1886. You can even download a copy of this map from the Library of Congress to your computer
MrSID Technology
While that may sound like fun in and of itself, the real excitement comes when using the MrSID plug-in for your Internet Explorer web browser. The MrSID technology was developed at University of New Hamsphire and allows a photo to be enlarged to many times its original size without losing its crispness. The following section of the map was enlarged many times so that I could see how my house at 39 East Main Street looked in 1886
Step One - Locate MrSID Panoramic Maps on Library of Congress web site
Here.s how you can get started. Connect to the Internet and start your Internet Explorer (IE) web browser. Type http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/pmmapTitles06.html into Address at the top of the window (or just click on the link here). Scroll down until you see the link for Cambridge, NY 1886 and single-click on it. Once the map is displayed, click on the map to view information about downloading a MrSID version of the map. We downloaded to our web site panoramic maps of several surrounding towns. Instead of going to the LOC web site, you can download them from our web site.
Step Two - Download and Install MrSID Browser Plug-in
Next, type http://www.lizardtech.com/download/dl_options.php?page=viewers into Address at the top of your IE window (or just click on the link here). In the middle of the page is a link you can click to download the Windows version of MrSID (now called ExpressView Browser Plugin).
Step Three - Zoom in
Once MrSID is installed on your computer, you have special powers when viewing the Cambridge panoramic map. You can click to enlarge a section. Click again to enlarge more. Click on the Hand-icon and drag the map image to scroll in any direction. Did I mention that all of this is FREE!!! The maps are free; the MrSID browser plug-in is free; everything is free.

What's Next? - Download Other Panoramic Maps
If you're interested in more than just Cambridge, type this Address into your IE web browser: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/pmmapTitles01.html. (or just click on the link here). This will give you a list of all the panoramic and bird's eye maps that are stored in the Library of Congress. We have downloaded to our web site panoramic maps of several surrounding towns. We've found it confusing at times to locate items on the LOC web site so we thought it would be easier to find things on our web site.
